Fun Fact: Higgs Boson Particle is Proven, Stephen Hawking Loses Bet

With the recent discovery that the Higgs boson has all but been found by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at Europe’s CERN, famous physicist Stephen Hawking paid off a $100 bet to Gordon Kane. Hawking never thought the Higgs boson would be found and said such at conference ten years ago before the LHC was built.  Gordon Kane from the University of Michigan accepted Hawking’s bet saying “I was confident a Higgs boson would be found…It completes the description built up over several centuries, and points the way to strengthen the foundations of the Standard Model. Winning the bet is a very nice frosting on the cake."
