The Polio vaccine announced by Salk 59 years ago this week. On March 26, 1953, Dr. Jonas Salk publicized his work on the vaccine for polio. The results of preliminary testing on a small human sample were announced on this day and published soon after in JAMA.
After general use of the vaccine commenced in 1955, cases of polio declined rapidly in the U.S., from 35,000 in 1953 to only 161 in 1957. There are virtually no cases of polio today in the US. Who can imagine what other diseases will be nearly eradicated in another 59 years due to vaccines being developed today?
